Gilbert and Sullivan Group.
Group Leader: Mike Ward

A regular booking has been made for group meetings in the Quiet Room at Putnoe Heights Church on the third Wednesday of each month from 2-4pm.

Purpose of group

Our purpose is to share our enjoyment of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operas and to understand more of the historical context in which they were written. We decided at our first meeting to listen to and study the operas in the order of their first performances, starting with Trial by Jury, but this not a rigid plan. We did listen to Trial by Jury on CD, but we have also watched most of Mike Leigh’s film “Topsy Turvy” on DVD, which depicts a later period in the G&S/D’Oyly Carte partnership.

Information and outings

We also share information about G&S events and some of us saw productions at Stewartby (Pirates of Penzance) and Cambridge (Mikado) towards the end off 2010. We had a group outing to the Royal Theatre, Northampton, to see Ruddigore early in 2011 and we hope this will be the first of many such trips.
