The U3A Handbell group started in September 2011 originally for 10 sessions, with 12 members, for most of whom it was completely new. Some of the ringers had no musical experience, but all were very enthusiastic. We have played a wide variety of music and have had a lot of fun. Amongst the comments from the group were: ‘It’s the best 50p I’ve ever spent!’ and ‘Doesn’t the hour fly by quickly!’
Sue Butler was also a volunteer at Anjulita Court and arranged for us to play there in December. Despite their nerves the team did very well and the residents joined in singing with some of the pieces. Thanks also to Ann Baily for her help each week setting up and assisting people with their parts.
Anyone wishing to have a go, you just need a sense of rhythm. If there is enough interest, I’m happy to start a second group in September on Thursday afternoons.
